Kibo and re-examining communication

We spend a large portion of our lives communicating. Whether it’s via phone or text message, speaking to a partner or colleague, or even non-verbally. No matter how we do it, communication is an integral part of our lives.
 
What’s fascinating is the way that our communication has changed so dramatically over the past few years. Accelerating at an ever-increasing pace, we have gone from telephones that were operated mechanically, to a plethora of tools and platforms that each offers something unique.
It might shock some people to hear that many mobile users- especially teens- see more “traditional” platforms such as Facebook as something their parents (or even grandparents!) use.
This could sound a little ironic- given that Facebook only started in February of 2004, and only became “mainstream” around 2006- yet once again the rapid pace of technology and user adoption has ensured that this “out with the old, in with the new” cycle is getting a whole lot tighter.
Consider that we have moved from sharing in-depth articles to 140-character Tweets, 6 second Vine videos, and now express ourselves in (pretty awesome) 2-second animated gifs.
Today it’s Kik and Snapchat, LINE, WeChat, QQ, BBM, Viber…the list goes on.
Users are no longer satisfied with communicating using voice and text- which has been the standard offering for well over a decade. The phonecall and sms were standard across every device and platform for decades, without much scope for self-expression.
Today, users demand a variety and personalized element from their platform of choice, which can include the seamless sharing of photo’s, videos, stickers, voice clips, and many other media forms, almost without limit.
So much has this trend caught on, that platform giant Snapchat (itself valued at around $15 billion), recently bought sticker company Bitstrips for $100m.
At Kibo, we see this trend continuing to gain momentum. Not only in terms of Stickers and Emoji’s, but also in the realms of sounds and animation, which will seamlessly integrate into a user’s communication experience. This, coupled with the increasing use of bots and Artificial Intelligence, means that the pace of change is going to accelerate further and within a very short space of time, we are going to see a whole new world of communication.
As is often seen, it will be the younger users who will be the early adopters, after which these tools will become completely mainstream.

Kibo’s new technology has already taken these changes into account, and the company is excited to be at the cutting edge of this exciting new area of communication.
In the poignant and emotional words of Mark Zuckerberg, written for Facebook’s 10th anniversary:
“When I reflect on the last 10 years, one question I ask myself is: why were we the ones to build this? We were just students. We had way fewer resources than big companies. If they had focused on this problem, they could have done it.
The only answer I can think of is: we just cared more.
While some doubted that connecting the world was actually important, we were building. While others doubted that this would be sustainable, you were forming lasting connections.
We just cared more about connecting the world than anyone else. And we still do today.
That’s why I’m even more excited about the next ten years than the last. The first ten years were about bootstrapping this network. Now we have the resources to help people across the world solve even bigger and more important problems.
Today, only one-third of the world’s population has access to the internet. In the next decade, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to connect the other two-thirds.
Today, social networks are mostly about sharing moments. In the next decade, they’ll also help you answer questions and solve complex problems.
Today, we have only a few ways to share our experiences. In the next decade, technology will enable us to create many more ways to capture and communicate new kinds of experiences.”
Watch this space – because from ordering your coffee to saying hi to your friend, nothing will ever be the same again.
